Jacuzzi in the Bedroom or the Bathroom? Where Hotels Put the Tub
Most hotels with a private jacuzzi put it in the bedroom. Of the 6,183 hotels and rentals on TubHotels where a source confirms where the tub sits, 58% have it in the bedroom, 38% in the bathroom and 3% on a private balcony or patio. The cheaper the hotel, the closer the tub is to the bed.
Where the tub sits changes the stay more than what the hotel calls it. A tub beside the bed is the centerpiece of the room: you see it from the pillow, and the room stays warm and a little humid while it fills. A tub in the bathroom gives more privacy, and the bedroom stays a bedroom. Booking sites often leave this out, so we note it for every room where a source confirms it. This report looks at where the tub sits by chain, hotel class, region, property type and price.
Key findings
- Radisson and Country Inn & Suites put the tub in the bedroom at 88% of the hotels we list, the highest share of any chain. Red Roof (81%) and the Wyndham brands (80%) come next.
- Hilton (44%) and Marriott (42%) put it in the bedroom at fewer than half of their hotels, about the same as independent hotels (46%).
- The Midwest is bedroom tub country: 74% of hotels there put the tub by the bed, against 61% in the South, 50% in the Northeast and 47% in the West.
- At the economy chains, a hotel with the tub in the bedroom starts at about the same rate as one with it in the bathroom ($81 and $86). The big gap is at independent hotels ($108 and $159).
- Among independent hotels, the higher the class, the further the tub from the bed: it is in the bedroom at 77% of 2-star hotels and 22% of 5-star hotels.
- B&Bs and inns (64%) and resorts (64%) keep it in the bathroom at most properties. Motels put it in the bedroom at 76%.
- Tubs built for two sit in the bedroom 81% of the time, and heart-shaped tubs 89%.
The overall split
| Where the tub is | Share of hotels | Hotels |
|---|---|---|
| In the bedroom | 58% | 3,591 |
| In the bathroom | 38% | 2,370 |
| On a balcony or patio | 3% | 172 |
| Rooms in two places | 1% | 50 |
| Total with a confirmed placement | 6,183 |
A bedroom tub sits in the sleeping area, often beside or at the foot of the bed. A bathroom tub is a jetted bath in the ensuite. A small number of hotels have one kind of jacuzzi room with the tub by the bed and another with it in the bathroom. The hot tub types page explains the terms hotels use for each and lists the states and cities where each placement is most common.
By hotel chain
Share of each chain's hotels with the tub in the bedroom and in the bathroom.
| Chain | Bedroom | Bathroom | Hotels |
|---|---|---|---|
| Radisson (incl. Country Inn & Suites) | 88% | 11% | 168 |
| Red Roof | 81% | 19% | 42 |
| Wyndham (Days Inn, Super 8, La Quinta, Ramada and others) | 80% | 19% | 789 |
| Motel 6 | 78% | 20% | 45 |
| Choice (Comfort, Quality, Sleep Inn, Econo Lodge and others) | 75% | 24% | 758 |
| Best Western | 74% | 24% | 424 |
| Sonesta (incl. Americas Best Value) | 68% | 30% | 63 |
| IHG (Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express and others) | 62% | 37% | 376 |
| Independent hotels | 46% | 48% | 2,710 |
| Hilton (incl. Hampton Inn, Embassy Suites) | 44% | 52% | 538 |
| Marriott (incl. Courtyard, Fairfield) | 42% | 54% | 248 |
| Hyatt | 0% | 91% | 22 |
The chains fall into two groups, and the line between them follows the price tier more than the size of the chain. The economy and midscale brands (Radisson, Wyndham, Choice and Best Western) put the tub in the bedroom at about three hotels out of four or more. Hilton, Marriott and Hyatt, the upscale brands, put it in the bathroom more often than in the bedroom. IHG sits between the two at 62%; most IHG hotels on our lists are a Holiday Inn or a Holiday Inn Express. For a guest, the brand is one of the best clues to where the tub will be.
Does a bedroom tub mean a cheaper hotel?
Across all hotels it looks that way: hotels with the tub in the bedroom start at a median of $93 a night, against $128 for a bathroom tub and $186 for a tub on a balcony or patio. Split by type of hotel, most of that gap goes away at the chains.
| Hotels | Tub in the bedroom | Tub in the bathroom |
|---|---|---|
| Economy and midscale chains | $81 (1,763 hotels) | $86 (477 hotels) |
| Hilton, Marriott and Hyatt | $118 (340) | $130 (433) |
| Independent hotels | $108 (1,200) | $159 (1,173) |
Median starting price per night: the lowest rate we have for each hotel, not the rate of the jacuzzi room, which is usually higher.
At the chains, the layout barely changes the starting price. At independent hotels it does: those with the tub in the bathroom start much higher. Part of that is the mix, since independents with a bedroom tub are more often motels and those with a bathroom tub more often B&Bs, resorts and vacation homes. The gap stays large even when only independent hotels are counted, without the B&Bs, resorts and rentals.
By hotel class
Share of hotels in each star class with the tub in the bedroom and in the bathroom.
| Hotel class | Bedroom | Bathroom | Hotels |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 stars | 78% | 21% | 715 |
| 3 stars | 61% | 37% | 1,795 |
| 4 stars | 50% | 46% | 1,311 |
| 5 stars | 28% | 63% | 145 |
Each star moves the tub further from the bed. At 5-star hotels, 8% of tubs are outdoors on a private balcony or terrace, the highest share of any class.
The star class on booking sites is not always right for economy brands (some list a motel as four stars), so the cleanest view is the independent hotels alone:
| Independent hotels | Bedroom | Bathroom | Hotels |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 stars | 77% | 22% | 266 |
| 3 stars | 52% | 44% | 620 |
| 4 stars | 34% | 60% | 531 |
| 5 stars | 22% | 68% | 87 |
Without a brand standard behind them, independent hotels follow their price tier closely: the higher the class, the more likely the tub is in the bathroom or out on a terrace.
One-star hotels (27) are too few for a row of their own.
By region
Share of hotels in each US region with the tub in the bedroom, in the bathroom and outdoors on a private balcony, patio or deck.
| Region (hotels) | Bedroom | Bathroom | Outdoors |
|---|---|---|---|
| Midwest (1,516) | 74% | 26% | 0% |
| South (1,894) | 61% | 36% | 2% |
| Northeast (737) | 50% | 48% | 2% |
| West (1,377) | 47% | 45% | 6% |
The Midwest stands apart, and its mix of hotels goes a long way to explain it: 71% of the Midwest hotels we list belong to a chain, most of them economy and midscale brands, against 45% in the Northeast and 42% in the West. Those two regions split almost evenly between bedroom and bathroom. The Northeast has the highest share of B&Bs and inns (12% of its properties whose type we know, against 3% in the Midwest). The West also has the most outdoor tubs (6%), and more resorts and vacation homes than any other region.
Regions follow the US Census Bureau. Canada, the UK and a few US listings without a state in the address are not included.
B&Bs, resorts, motels and rentals
Share of each type of property with the tub in the bedroom, in the bathroom and outdoors.
| Type (properties) | Bedroom | Bathroom | Outdoors |
|---|---|---|---|
| Motel (329) | 76% | 23% | 1% |
| Hotel (3,857) | 62% | 35% | 2% |
| Cabin (33) | 39% | 24% | 30% |
| Resort (149) | 31% | 64% | 4% |
| B&B or inn (305) | 31% | 64% | 4% |
| Vacation home (122) | 25% | 54% | 16% |
B&Bs and inns are the mirror image of motels: at a motel the jacuzzi suite is built around the tub, and at a B&B the tub is usually part of the private bathroom. Cabins and vacation homes are the most likely to have the tub outside, on a deck or patio, though the number of cabins with a confirmed placement is small.
Tubs for two, heart-shaped tubs and adults-only stays
The more a room is built for a romantic night, the more likely the tub is by the bed. Of the 233 hotels whose listing describes the tub as built for two (a "2-person whirlpool" or a "jacuzzi for two"), 81% have it in the bedroom, against 58% of all hotels. Part of that is the chains that name rooms this way, mostly Choice and Radisson, but the effect holds inside a chain too: at Choice hotels, 84% of tubs for two are in the bedroom, against 75% of all their jacuzzi rooms. Heart-shaped tubs are almost always there: 47 of the 53 we have confirmed, or 89%. The full list is on the heart-shaped jacuzzi page.
Adults-only properties go the other way: 52% of the 99 with a confirmed placement keep the tub in the bathroom. More than half of them are B&Bs and inns (62% of those whose type we know), so they follow the B&B pattern.
What the room name tells you
Hotels often leave out where the tub is, but the name of the room is a clue. For each word in the room name, the share of rooms with the tub in the bedroom:
| Room name contains | Tub in the bedroom | Hotels |
|---|---|---|
| "whirlpool suite" | 79% | 81 |
| "hot tub" | 72% | 367 |
| "jacuzzi suite" | 67% | 219 |
| "jetted" | 59% | 1,125 |
| "spa tub" | 47% | 614 |
A "whirlpool suite" is the safest bet for a tub by the bed. A "spa tub" is in the bathroom about as often as in the bedroom, so check the photos. The hot tub types page explains what each word means.
What this means when you book
- You want the tub beside the bed. Start with Radisson, Wyndham, Choice and Best Western hotels, and with motels. Their whirlpool suites put the tub in the room at about three hotels out of four or more. In the Midwest it is the usual layout.
- You want the tub in a private bathroom. B&Bs, inns, resorts, the upscale chains and independent 4 and 5-star hotels are the better bet.
- You want to soak outdoors. Look at cabins, vacation homes and 5-star resorts, especially in the western states.
- Check the photos before you book. Room photos usually show where the tub is, and every card on TubHotels shows the placement once a source confirms it. How we verify explains what counts as a source.
How we counted
- Hotels: every hotel, motel, inn and rental listed on TubHotels at the last update: 7,149 listings, each counted once even when it appears on several pages. A placement is counted only when a source confirms it: the room photos, the hotel's own room description or a booking site listing. 6,183 listings have one.
- Chains: matched by brand name. Hotels that belong to no chain we could match count as independent. Economy and midscale chains in the price table: Best Western, Choice, Motel 6, Radisson, Red Roof, Sonesta and Wyndham.
- Hotel class: the star class shown on booking sites, known for 3,993 of the hotels with a placement.
- Property type: read from each property's own site or its Expedia or Vrbo listing, checked October 8 and 9, 2026.
- Prices: the lowest nightly rate we have for each hotel in US dollars, not the rate of the jacuzzi room. UK hotels are left out of the price tables.
- Tubs for two: a room name or listing that says "for two", "2-person" or "double whirlpool". Most of these hotels are Choice and Radisson hotels, which name rooms this way.
- Adults only: the property's own site or its Expedia or Vrbo listing says it takes adults only.
We update these figures regularly, whenever the hotels on our lists change.
