If I could give them a zero star I would. My aunt came into town and we came to visit. The front desk lady told us we had to leave as we were not paying for a room. We were in the main area. We were not harming anything besides visiting our family. Since when can you not visit your family in a the main room of the hotel where the pool was. It’s not like we were swimming!
I booked a room with the intention of hosting a small surprise gathering for a friend—about 5–6 adult women having drinks, playing board games, and possibly using the pool. Before booking, I explicitly explained these plans over the phone and was told it would not be an issue.
Upon arrival, the front desk attendant watched us put up a small, tasteful decoration display and waited until after it was completed to tell us it had to be taken down. When I explained that I had already cleared this in advance, there was no attempt to resolve the situation or honor what I had been told.
This felt incredibly misleading, as if approval was given just to secure the reservation, knowing we would be locked in once we arrived. After attending and hosting gatherings here for over 25 years, this experience has ensured it will be our last. Take your money elsewhere.
This may have been the best hotel experience we have had in many years. The calming energy in this place was just what this family needed after a long road trip. The staff was so welcoming & helpful the whole stay. Very dog friendly establishment! Tons of grassy areas to walk your dog. The hotel is clean, like really clean. No musty smells, no dingy rooms or carpet. This place is so nice. The pool area is warm & welcoming during a cold midwest winter. I was very impressed to see the pool & hot tub have accessibility chairs. I could spend a lot of time in their atrium/pool area relaxing. The game room is a fun place to waste some time. We had a room right off of the pool on the first floor and it was surprisingly quiet. The hotel wasn't super busy due to the holiday, but that meant we had one of the quitest stays at a hotel we have experienced. Rooms are easy to find, it doesn't feel like a maze, which is the case in other establishments. The water pressure in the shower may have been the best surprise. Normally hotel water pressure is questionable and they have the cheapest shower heads, but not here, this shower seemed updated with plenty of water pressure. There was a desk for the husbsnd to set up for work. The couch was not cloth, but honetly I prefer that, it is way easier to wipe clean after guest use compared to fabric. The staff even switched our reservation with no issues when we were unable to make it on our original date due to car issues. I can't say enough good things about this stop, it will definitely become a regular stay when we drive to visit family.
My wife and I have stayed here twice in the last six months. The front desk staff are very friendly, personable and professional. The rooms are clean, modern and well kept and the price in comparison to others is very good. The Hotel is minutes from downtown and many area attractions. Attached through an indoor walkway is an Old Chicago restaurant with a full service bar. The staff here are also very friendly and professional and this is where a full complementary breakfast for guests is served every morning. We will definitely stay here again on our next visit to Dubuque.
You know, it’s funny. Sometimes how you’re greeted at a hotel really sets the tone for the stay, and honestly - we felt quite unimportant and it sort of colored our opinion of this otherwise fine location. Pros: free breakfast and it was excellent (with scrambled eggs, sausage, potatoes, pancakes and many other options) -Really comfortable beds and amazing pillows (wish they were for sale) -A large pool area -Attached restaurant/bar for convenience -Exceptionally fast wifi (134 mbps download/70 mbps upload)
Cons: check-in experience made us feel unwelcomed. Wasn’t thanked for being diamond select members, wasn’t given bottles of water (others were), weren’t told the best way to get to our room (there was a back entrance really close but instead we trekked all though the hotel) and we were never asked if we’d like to have a pool-adjacent room (of which there were at least 18 empty ones in the morning, so they weren’t full) instead we were way down some dark long hallway, so far from the pool that we never bothered to venture out to it. -A/C wasn’t working. Kept going back to 76F. Had maintenance go into our room when we weren’t there (which we didn’t love) to make it cold but hours later it went right back to 76 and we were uncomfortable all night. -no clock in room -large (1.5 inch?) gap between our door and the adjacent room so we could hear all the dog barking and spousal yelling of the guests in the next room. We stuffed a towel under the gap but it didn't help much. -Coffee machine in lobby was out of order.
In our opinion, this stay was no "plus" Price on a weeknight in Sept 2025 was $162 USD before tax.
Absolutely fabulous! Gorgeous historic hotel with everything under one roof. The staff showed a level of excellence I have seen nowhere else in recent times.
I have travelled here at least 10 times in the past year. Far better than other hotel options downtown. The fitness/pool area is roomy and high quality. The bathrooms are awesome. No microwave in room, but I eat out most nights and there are plenty of options nearby. This hotel does a great job of balancing historical ambiance with modern amenities. Definitely a great value.
This was an outstanding experience. Such a feeling of luxury, and nostalgia. It's a beautiful place, with lots of comfort. Really enjoyed sitting by the fireplace, and relaxing in the hot tub on a chilly evening. Very clean, and the beds are comfortable. Definitely dine at Caroline's on the lower level.
Lovely historic hotel in the middle of Dubuque. The location is perfect for visiting all that Dubuque has to offer, and is one block the best brewery in town, Dimensional brewing.
Staff was very friendly and helpful.
The pool was very nice too.
The room was huge , and we had no issues with noise.
What a beautiful hotel. Coming in from Minneapolis for a business trip . Our three night stay was great. Great amenities, pool and hot tub was nice. Front desk staff, very knowledgeable and super friendly. Hotel is clean and smells like the beautiful spa downstairs. Clean rooms, comfortable beds and first class bathroom and showers! If I'm in town again, I'll definitely choose here to stay. Thank you.
