This is an excellent hotel with top-notch service and impressive rooms. The view from our room of the pool and city was great. Our bed may have been the most comfortable we've ever slept in. We also enjoyed the restaurants attached. We were offered free drinks when we arrived, and in the morning we opted to have breakfast at Provisional Kitchen which is attached to the hotel. The interior was gorgeous and the food was great, but on the expensive side. My wife and young daughter were able to enjoy the pool and hot tub.The only unfortunate downside of the hotel is the amount of homeless people seemingly surrounding the area. At all hours of the day, they seemed to be wandering out, sometimes shouting quite loudly. We were told by a street vendor it's not safe to be walking around the area. This was around 9am. It's too bad because the area itself it nice, only a few blocks away from where the San Diego Padres play. I would've loved to have taken a nice walk over to the Stadium in the morning with some coffee, but it just didn't feel safe at all, and that definitely deserves to take off one star, although it has absolutely nothing to do with the excellent Pendry Hotel itself. However, if you stay here it will be very hard not to notice the vibe outside the hotel, so be forewarned. Luckily, there is isn't much reason to wander outside because you have much of what you need on the property.

I am typically fairly picky with level of service in hotels and restaurants, but i am also realistic. My 3 night stay at Pendry last week was absolutely excellent, and i don't have anything negative to say at all. The location is unbeatable. The pool area is great. The lounge & sports bar had great options. All of the staff was very friendly. I would definitely stay here again.

Love this hotel. Gorgeous lobby, rooms, restaurant and pool. Service doesn’t feel 5* but is still top quality. Overall I’ll definitely be coming to stay again next time I’m in town. Overnight valet parking offered. Lots of food and drink options in the building or room service.Front desk service is quick, friendly and polite.Pool service is hit or miss depending on who is around.DJ music is great! (Wish the DJ wouldn’t talk loudly to his coworkers and ruin the ambience, just step to the side and talk quietly!)Apparently a welcome drink was available but nobody mentioned this or provided it, so will investigate that next time and report back.Be warned that it’s really loud on the weekend due to the central location!!

Walking distance to so much! Rooms were beautiful! The fries by the pool are a must! They are AMAZING (craved them for the rest of our trip). The Provisional has really great breakfast and espresso! Would definitely book again!

This place is truly exceptional. From the outdoor staff to the receptionist, everyone exudes professionalism and attentiveness. The room was impeccably clean and flawless. The bed provided outstanding comfort. Room service was punctual, and the delivery person was outstanding. It's evident that this hotel invests in continuous training to ensure all guests are treated like royalty. I'm truly grateful for the incredible attention I received.

Great location - right by the Gaslamp district and an easy walk to the convention center (I was here for a conference). Super friendly staff! I was able to get a super early check in. Nice rooms, comfy bedding, giant towels! They are also very dog friendly, which I will remember for next time to bring my pup! I would definitely stay here again! It’s a great deal!

Things I liked about this hotel:- beautiful clean hotel at a good price- the front desk staff were very friendly, especially the gentleman on overnight shift when we arrived at midnight- convenient location - Union Square is a great area and it was walking distance to places we wanted to go like the Ferry Building- breakfast in the morning at the bar - coffees and pastries available for purchaseMuch has been said in the reviews about the homeless population. I would compare what I saw here in Union Square to what you’d see any day in Times Square in NYC. I did not feel unsafe in any way, but if your sensibilities are such that you can’t handle even seeing someone homeless, then maybe that’s something you should be thinking about. One thing to know is that the showers (at least the one we had) have an adjustable head that doesn’t easily stay in the right position. The position it eventually found an equilibrium was one that tended to spray water toward the side of the shower that was not covered by glass. It didn’t absolutely drench the bathroom but you have to be careful because it does tend to make the floor wet.We did experience one minor upset in terms of the service. We stayed 3 nights, arriving midnight the first night. They have a policy that rooms are not serviced every day, which I have seen in other hotels, but that you can request clean towels etc. The first day we didn’t get service, and slept another night. By this time we did hope for clean towels due to some drenching due to the aforementioned shower problem. On the way out for the day, we told the woman cleaning rooms that we would like a little service eg the bins emptied and new towels. We got back at 3 pm and it had not been done. We called down to the front desk and said that we had not been serviced but we would like towels at least if possible - after a little back and forth about when they could be available, we stated that we’d like them around 5 pm because we were about to lie down for a nap. Not 20 minutes into our nap we had a knock on the door awakening us from someone trying to give us towels. Not the worst thing to happen but it seemed like this comedy of errors could have been avoided if there was clear understanding on the part of service staff. However I still consider this a great experience overall and just wanted to write this to tell others in advance what to expect in terms of room service.

My recent experience at this hotel was nothing short of fantastic. The hotel’s location, especially for the convention center and nearby restaurants, is top-notch. The staff’s warmth and hospitality truly made the stay memorable. The manager, Alan, deserves special praise for his friendly and attentive approach, ensuring all our requests were met with precision and care. The hotel and rooms are clean and surprisingly quiet. The only caveat is that there is no gym and no breakfast. However, they are not big issues to me as I like run outside, and there are plenty restaurants nearby to get breakfast. They do offerer two small items and one beverage from the refrigerator for you to take in the morning, and a welcome drink for your entire stay. Without a doubt, I highly recommend this place for an outstanding and comfortable experience.

Honestly? One of the best hotel stays I've ever had. It was SO QUIET, even being located right on a main street. The rooms are very well insulated. We had just come from a convention center hotel that was much larger with bigger rooms, but I prefer the thoughtful way these rooms are appointed - no space is wasted. The amenities were really nice, I loved the bed and the fun atmosphere of the hotel in general. My only request would be a slightly larger lobby area that could accommodate some light desk work, and possibly a snack bar that wasn't kept behind the front desk (I don't want to have to ask for my snacks!).

FAQs about San Diego boutique hotels

What is the typical price range for boutique hotels in San Diego?

Boutique hotels in San Diego cater to a variety of budgets, typically ranging from about $150 to $450 per night. The price can vary significantly depending on the hotel’s location, style, and the amenities it offers. Waterfront or beachside hotels, especially in popular areas like La Jolla or Coronado, tend to be pricier. However, there are more budget-friendly boutique options available, particularly if you consider neighborhoods slightly removed from the main tourist areas, yet still offering the unique charm and personalized experience boutique hotels are known for.

When is the best time to visit San Diego for a boutique hotel stay?

The best time to visit San Diego for a boutique hotel experience is from March to May and then again from September to November. During these months, you can enjoy mild weather and fewer crowds, making it easier to explore the city and its attractions. While the summer months are popular for tourists, they also bring higher hotel rates and more crowded beaches. Visiting in the shoulder seasons allows you to take advantage of better rates and a more relaxed atmosphere, perfect for enjoying the unique offerings of boutique accommodations.

While prices for boutique hotels in San Diego can increase during major events and festivals, such as Comic-Con or the San Diego County Fair, there are still affordable options available. Early booking is recommended to secure better rates. Also, consider looking for hotels in less central areas, which can offer lower prices even during high-demand periods. Some hotels might offer special packages or promotions during these times, which could include additional amenities or discounts on longer stays, providing greater value for your visit during these vibrant, event-filled periods.
