Cell service is also really spotty. Make sure you have WiFi Calling enabled. Speaking of WiFi, the service they provided was very fast and just about everywhere. Bravo on that.
That said, the place is awesome. We stayed in the Galileo, and Dracula room and both were the coolest rooms ever. A shame we did not get a clear night to star gaze and see he moon with the telescope in the Galileo room observation loft. You will not be disappointed with either room. They put a lot of thought into the rooms and the attention to detail is noticeable. Well done.
The pool and Crooked House were amazing as well as was the service we experienced. I only wish they still had the on-site spa services. When you visit the Crooked House you can see the elaborate spa setup they have. You can use the facilities, just no services like a massage and such. The grounds are well kept and the hike to the waterfall was a great way to spend time. The observation deck is very well done.
Location is close to the main town area of Windham which has some fabulous restaurants and it’s a great location for skiers and hikers.
Stayed in the most basic option here which was the deluxe double bed room - (Hamilton suite)
As a first time customer we weren’t familiar with how to check in- booking through Priceline didn’t tell us which room we had or where to get any keys or a code … and upon arriving we didn’t see any lobby to check in. Luckily we ran into someone driving around who worked there when we arrived and they helped us to figure out which room and code we had (obviously they worked there but they didn’t really introduce themself or anything) . The property has a few different roads that lead to different buildings and the wood signage is very faded and hard to read - it can use a repaint .
The room itself was wonderful and clean, beds and pillows really comfortable , working tv and AC. My only complaint is there is NO coffee machine, microwave , mini fridge , or cups and even the cheapest motel rooms usually include that — this area caters big to hikers and sometimes hikers leave for hikes as early as sunrise when most coffee shops or food places aren’t open yet— so it would be nice to be able to make a cup of coffee or warm up some breakfast we bring ourselves. I understand that the more expensive suites probably include this but as the cheapest suite, it’s still listed at $198 a night plus fees and even motels that are half the price usuallly include these amenities I mentioned .
Bottom line, I would stay here again but I would be a little more prepared next time to make sure I figure out which room I’m staying in and to possibly bring my own equipment to make coffee and whatnot . Or I might try one of the nicer suites .
When we finally got inside, we were disappointed to see that the place had obviously not been prepped or cleaned before our arrival. There was no trash bag in the trash, barely any toilet paper, and the rug underneath the bed hadn’t been vacuumed and was covered in previous guests hair and crumbs. To make matters worse, the hot tub was had yellow water and the smell of chemicals was overpowering enough to sting our eyes. Pretty disappointing to have the one thing we were looking forward to be unusable!
Before going out for dinner that night, we couldn’t figure out how to lock the door to the cabin with the digital pin pad, despite calling management and being instructed by them. Eventually I was able to get it to work by hitting random buttons. When we came back later, we were unable to unlock the door with the code we were originally provided that worked earlier. We had to call management yet again, who weren’t much help and offered a different code which didn’t work either. Finally, the original code decided to work randomly after being stuck outside for over five minutes!
If we didn’t live over three hours away, we likely would have left and headed home right then and there. We probably had to phone management at least five times in a matter of a few hours since arriving due to various issues and questions, who were apparently somewhere in New Jersey. Thankfully, whoever was answering the calls picked up the phone every time we called, and we ended up getting a full refund after spending just the one night and leaving for home first thing in the morning.
What should have been a memorable and relaxing weekend away for us in this beautiful part of the state ended up leaving us with a huge headache and disappointment, and I’m not quite sure how this place has such high reviews given our disastrous experience here!
