In the past we have always looked forward to coming here.On arrival we were dealt with immediately which is as it should be really - whether it is quiet or not - and it was very quiet. We did the menu ordering and had some tea. Little things that aren't actually little things - all started to add up to make this very frustrating before even getting into the spa. The water machine needed filling for tea or coffee, and then we weren't given robes, so had to come back out of the changing room and return upstairs to ask for them. Then the lockers weren't working. Well a few of them wouldn't lock and another guest explained that many were broken - so that added to the sense of doom that maybe standards had indeed started to slip. The actual basic functions worked - though the odd spa jet here or there, doesn't work. The pool is the pool and always a lovely temperature. The outdoor sauna was the same, though the jacuzzi doesn't work in one corner or on one side so if two other guests are using it - you sit there like a lemon, waiting to get some bubbles. The lunch is always very low key - so salads and something else very light; so we both ordered steak - which comes at a 15.00gbp surcharge. This is no reflection on the chef - who seared it beautifully - but the standard of the meat was so low. It was quite notable that the meat is cheapest steak - and even basic supermarket steak - can cook better and is much less chewy and hard to eat therefore. The waitress did her best and gave us an extra glass of champagne to make up for it. I sent some steak back to the kitchen so they could check to see how chewy/grissly it was.Treatments were good - and the woman who did mine did understand the need for proper massage - always a worry these days in the UK because so often if you don't make sure you specify - you can get a newly trained inexperienced therapist who doesn't have the manual handling capacity or hand/finger strength to actually deliver an effective proper massage. Everyone wants to leave or does leave when being tickled instead of massaged - for all the obvious reasons. It wasn't too busy on the upside and we were relaxed when we left and slept well. It is just a shame when corners are clearly clearly being cut - and staff seem distracted and as if waiting for the next complaint. Surely when one arrives - feeling relaxed is key from the moment you get there - not half an hour in after having to go and things and haggle for working lockers - to just put your things away. The changing room steam room was cold - and the number of tiles that have come away is so tragic - as no one has bothered to even try and fix them and many are obviously missing.I think if I had four luxury hotels - and couldn't run all of them as just that - 'luxury' - I would close one and run the other three as they are sold; a luxury item rather than letting things slide to the point paying guests see it. On arrival. It just seems that everywhere one turns now - even erstwhile bastions of some sanity away from the crumbling UK - like Alexander House - are also now prey to the dissolution of standards and safeguarding against value being eroded. Of course UK spas have always fallen behind Europe - and if you've been to Eastern Europe - where spa culture is embedded and sanitoriums have been keeping working everyday people healthy for aeons - on the premise that when we have health we can work, and live, and enjoy it - you can't but help feel sad that the UK really is going backwards and so fast. Spas abroad charge so much less, for so much more - and you live with that health instilled for weeks after the experience...But Alexander House always felt a treat - and it is hard to pretend not to see what is happening here - though we try.Date of experience: October 2024
Took my wife here for her birthday, and can't knock the building and grounds. All really lovely and the staff were all very friendly and accommodating. The dinner was very nice, and again great staff but I'd say the prices didn't quite match the quality. But still a lovely meal..Reasons for 3 star is due to the spa, we got their early to use the facilities but could not get any space. It was busy which I appreciate is going to happen, but there must have been 30 chairs that had old towels heaped up on them, old drinks left laying around and magazines chucked everywhere. The spa is a lovely building but it was so messy any only needed some staff to be there to tidy up and clear spaces for new arriving guests. Would have change the experience all together. I can't call this a 5 star spa at all, it just didn't have that service level despite being a nice pool and facilities, just let down by the mess of it. So we had to abandoned the spa as couldn't even sit down. Real shame as this was the sole reason for coming.Sorry to leave that as a final review, but the spa was a mess and felt more like a leasure center pool than a relaxing 5 star hotel.Could have been so simple to resolve. Just needed staffing properly and kept clean for new arriving guest.
This hotel is a terrible disappointment. Rooms are tacky and ugly. The spa is terrible, way too busy, basic facilities (saunas cold and no mixed gender) steam not working, jacuzzi half working. Meal was fine but over priced. This is not a 5* and struggling for 4*
A beautiful spa in a lovely location. Staff were fantastic and accommodating. A really relaxing massage wish I knew the name of my therapist as she was fantastic! The food included in the spa day was mediocre. We go to lots of 5 star spas and I would say the food wasn't what I would expect compared to others that we have experienced. The steam room and experience showers are in the changing rooms so if you go as a couple you can't do those bits together.Overall a lovely spa.
It was our anniversary. We had a lovely warm welcome. The service and the food was excellent. The suite we had was excellent. A special mention to Rachel, the duty manager on the day. She really looked after us. Thank you so much. You made our anniversary celebration even more special.
Definitely not a 5 Star experience. I stayed in the Spa Suite room called Oak. The room cost £423. It had No Air Conditioning. The room is above the Pool/Spa area, as you could really feel the heat, it was way too hot, with only a basic Fan I had to take out the wardroom. No bottles of water in the room, or a Fridge. I asked for an ice Bucket to take to the room, but reception told me they had no ice, as the machine was broken. The mattress is two singles pushed together, it dips in the middle and you can really feel the springs, it definitely needs replacing. Due to the old mattress and the hard Springs, along with the heat with no Air Conditioning, I didn’t sleep well at all. I phoned reception in the morning to ask for late checkout at 12, and was told “ No, someone had paid for early check in at 12, so I had to be out by 11”. I told reception I wasn’t happy with my stay, and would be leaving a 1 star review. She didn’t even ask why, just said sorry. I wish I booked the Holiday Inn down the road, much better service, better beds, they have Ice and you can check out at 12 like most decent hotels. Avoid.
Room was large and surfaces were clean. Bathroom was huge. There were some dusty cobwebs along the very high ceilings which I can appreciate is something that maybe cannot be cleaned very regularly.Beautiful building. Nice food. Can find cheaper alternatives for a spa weekend. £1000 Including room, food, drink and 1 treatment for 1 night. Also would have been better to have treatment on the day of arrival since we paid extra for early check in and requested it.Overall lovely experience but didn't feel it was value for money
DisappointingWe went for the Sunday roast it was my dad's 74th birthday and after hearing about all the good reviews We would give it a try.We waited 50 minutes for our food to arrive !It arrived luke warm and with cold plates then another 5 minutes for the last plate to arriveThe food must have been sitting for a while the food was tasty but coldAfter clearing away the dinner plates we were asked if we would like to see the deserts menu and yes we wouldThe menus never arrived so my wife had to go and get them herselfDessetrts were ok !I think if you are going to charge a premium 32 pound each the service should be improvedAnd with service already added to the bill that's a bit offWe won't be returning
Both myself and my husband had an incredible wedding day. We cannot thank the staff enough, especially Sam, Chloe, Vicky and the young man working on the fire pit. Nothing was too much trouble and they were always on hand to help when needed! The venue itself is beautiful and the perfect setting for a wedding with gorgeous views for photos. The food was incredible from the canapés to the wedding breakfast and evening buffet and not forgetting the gorgeous breakfast the next day. All of our guests have commented on how good the food was.Cannot fault The Ferry House Inn at all we had the best day of our lives.
What a beautiful gem of a place!!Tucked away with a warm welcome, fabulous food, great service from newbie Samantha, and 2 very friendly gun dogs turned up as we where finishing up.100% recommend a must try for all 👌
The Ferry House made our wedding day wonderful. They took care of us through the day, the day after and the planning stage. It was great to have everything taken care of. Nothing went wrong. It was perfect. Our stay was amazing, and the food was excellent.
If you’re looking for a perfect wedding, in a perfect beautiful venue with picturesque scenery accompanied by delicious food, then The Ferry House is for you! My husband and I got married here this week and everything from start to finish has been perfect. The help and support from the Team in every wedding aspect has been excellent. Every single individual we’ve had contact with, have provided friendly professional service, nothing was ever too much for them. We stayed the night of our wedding and so did other family members and everyone has commented on how lovely the venue is, how clean and welcoming the rooms are and how good the food was too.I cannot thank everyone enough for helping us celebrate our special day, but an extra heartfelt thanks must go to Maxine and Chloe. xxx
Always a wonderful experience to dine here! Staff are always very attentive and food is always superb. Had the most amazing amaretto sour, which the mixologist kindly prepared, despite it not being on the menu. I sometimes visit for work purposes and the organisation and attention to detail is always second to none.
