This is a historic house, almost like a museum, where every room is decorated with antiques and where you can learn a lot about the history of Fairbanks and Alaska just from going from room to room. It is really fascinating. The decor is not modern, the bathrooms are old, but that’s the whole point. There is no TV anywhere in the house, but then again, there wasn’t a TV back in 1916 when this house was built. I would also say that the heating system is amazing.
The kitchen is part of the public space here, which is unusual for a B&B, and that’s because no one lives here. It’s fully stocked with snacks and drinks and everything you need. We got special treats for our stay in our room as well, which had a fully functioning kitchen for our own private stay.
The piano hasn’t been tuned since the Raegan administration, but did I say the house is full of antiques?
Location is perfect, 2 minutes walking distance from downtown Fairbanks. Parking is not an issue unless the place is packed in the summer, but we’re there in September.
The main issue of concern for you if you plan to book this house is who owns it and who works there. You should check out if it’s the same as it was back in the summer of 2023. If it is - it’s a great deal.
However, there is a major shortage of skilled labor in Fairbanks and so for example the rooms are not cleaned everyday, and if it gets any worse - not sure you’ll get freshly cooked breakfast either. (Margo is a friend of the owner, and not sure she’ll keep doing this next summer).
To summarize, this is a little overpriced, but it’s worth the money if the level of service is what it should be. We loved spending time in this house, we loved checking all the rooms (most were vacant since this was September) and we loved the food Margo cooked for us. We would stay there again if she was there when we came.
The lodge offers a unique and charming mix of accommodations—from cozy hotel rooms and rustic cabins to a reindeer ranger station (yes, really!), with even more to come. Each space has its own character, blending comfort with authentic Alaskan vibes.
What truly sets this place apart is its rich sense of history. The grounds are filled with signs and displays sharing fascinating stories about the lodge, the local area, and the people who helped shape it. It felt like staying in a living museum—but with all the modern comforts.
Waking up to the breathtaking waterfront views, enjoying peaceful evenings by the lodge, and learning about the history made this an unforgettable experience. We’re already talking about coming back!
Highly recommend Piles Waterfront Lodge to anyone looking for a one-of-a-kind, heartfelt Alaskan experience.

In Fairbanks, Alaska, hotels or lodgings that offer in-room hot tubs—or at least private spa-style tubs—typically range from around $105 to $330 per night. On the lower end, budget or extended-stay options fall near $105–$120 per night. Mid-tier hotels, such as branded chains with more amenities, average between $200 and $250. The ideal time to visit Fairbanks for a cozy hot tub stay is during the Northern Lights season, which spans from late August to mid‑April, with March often offering the clearest skies and greatest aurora visibility. This coincides with long nights perfect for relaxing soaks and aurora watching. Alternatively, summer months (June through August) feature mild temperatures, long daylight hours, and easier travel—though no northern lights.
