How to get the most out of the romantic getaway in Upstate New York?

To truly maximize the enjoyment of a romantic getaway in Upstate New York, consider these tailored strategies that blend adventure, relaxation, and intimate moments, ensuring every couple returns home with cherished memories:

  1. Plan Ahead for Seasonal Highlights: Upstate New York’s seasons dramatically transform the landscape, offering unique experiences year-round. For winter enchantment, book a cozy cabin near ski resorts or ice skating rinks. Spring and summer are perfect for exploring waterfalls and vineyards, while autumn’s foliage provides a stunning backdrop for hikes and scenic drives. Researching and timing your visit to coincide with these natural spectacles can significantly enhance your retreat.
  2. Select Accommodations with Character: Opt for lodgings that add a special touch to your stay—be it a historic inn with a fireplace in every room, a lakeside lodge offering sunrise views, or a boutique hotel with a private hot tub. Properties in the Catskills, the Adirondacks, or near Finger Lakes wineries often provide exclusive amenities and packages designed for couples, elevating the romantic ambiance.
  3. Embrace Local Cuisine and Wineries: The region’s culinary scene is a tapestry of farm-to-table restaurants, cozy cafes, and award-winning wineries. Reserve a table at a restaurant with panoramic views or spend a day touring vineyards with tastings to savor the local flavors. Many places offer special experiences, such as private dinners or wine pairing events, perfect for couples.
  4. Incorporate Outdoor Adventures: Whether it’s a leisurely hike to a secluded waterfall, a hot air balloon ride over the Letchworth State Park, or kayaking on Mirror Lake, integrating nature-based activities can add excitement and a sense of adventure to your romantic retreat. Choose activities that both of you are interested in to share in the thrill and beauty of the outdoors.
  5. Seek Out Unique Local Attractions: Every town and area in Upstate New York has its own charm and hidden gems. From exploring the historic estates along the Hudson River to enjoying a spa day in Saratoga Springs or discovering the quaint bookstores and art galleries of small towns, taking the time to explore these unique facets can add meaningful experiences to your getaway.
  6. Allow for Spontaneity: While planning is key, leaving room for spontaneous decisions—like a last-minute drive to catch a sunset or stopping by a roadside farm stand—can lead to some of the most memorable moments. Sometimes, the best experiences are the unplanned ones that arise from simply enjoying each other’s company in a new setting.

By focusing on these strategies, couples can ensure their getaway in Upstate New York is not just a break from the routine but a deep and enriching experience that strengthens their bond and leaves them with lasting memories.

Glenmere Mansion is an absolute gem! My partner and I stayed for the weekend and were pleasantly pleased with the white glove service, beautiful grounds, and delicious food! We enjoyed their vast majority of cocktails and dinner was “fresh and tasteful.”We also tried out the spa and absolutely loved the turkish bath ritual.Highly recommend this place for anyone looking for a great weekend getaway.

We were there during a slow period so the dining room was only open for breakfast However we had the full menu in the frog bar and it was delicious. The tables in the bar were not meant for dinner service so Adjustments had ti be made to accommodate a full dinner with wine, etc. Check in and ask before you book to be sure the dining room will be in use. There were also many things to do such as fishing, hiking, kayaking, outdoor workout area, tennis courts, and the pool and hot tub were perfectly set. They will not tell you about these extra amenities at check in . You either explore and find them or scan the QR codes at the morning coffee/tea area to learn about them.Overall a breathtaking and beautiful place. The spa was superior ,it was a great getaway!!

Had the pleasure of staying at Glenmere over New Years. Beautiful grounds and space. Spa experience was incredible. We loved sitting in the game room sipping wine and playing backgammon. Staff was accommodating and friendly. The rooms are decent, the beds are unfortunately not very comfortable - sheets weren’t luxurious and they strangely used standard sized pillows on a king size bed (weird thing for me to be concerned with but it was odd and added to the uncomfortable of the bed). The dining is decent, as well. It was not noteworthy, steaks and lobster at separate meals were very overcooked - almost felt as thought it was trying a bit to hard to be “fancy” but lacked any real technique or substance to the dishes. These are nit-picky things. If the beds and bedding were updated I would definitely make a trip back.

We stayed at the Otesaga Resort for a wedding. We decided to make a special treat of it, as it was also our anniversary weekend. We booked the Superior Room with a King bed for two nights at $679 per night. Our bill was $1,562.32 after taxes and fees. The arrival was great, and Ibraham who helped us with our luggage was exceptional. From there, everything fell apart. We were notified that there were "a few stairs", although I wasn't sure what that entailed. The top floor of the resort has no elevator service to the floor, and so you must exit the elevator and then walk up a narrow set of stairs to the top floor. The room was as advertised, but the view was not. I had reserved a "view room", paying more than my original reservation. Our window was a small dormer window and was covered up with a air conditioner unit, so we had no view of the lake.During the next two days, we repeatedly tried to have a meal in one of the resorts restaurants. Without exception, the hostesses were rude and condescending when we said we did not have a reservation (our first visit, we did not realize it was mandatory). We tried every one of the venues, to be treated the same each time. The absolute most unbelievable snub, however, was when we were sent a text during the wedding and told we would need to order the valet the night before in order to have help checking out. Since we were at the wedding, we didn't get the message in time. As we were on the top floor without elevator service, we had to carry all of our bags down the stairs and get the elevator, walk through the hotel to the parking lot to get to our car. After checking our, I sent a message with the survey to the management. I was never contacted. While this is a lovely old hotel, the management has no idea how to treat guests. For almost $800 a night, you would think they could afford some training.

Great views. Good food. Having drinks around the fire and sitting on the back porch next to the heaters made for magical fall evening experiences. Accommodations were nice but the bed was very uncomfortable and the bed pillows were too puffy.

Beautiful hotel, beautiful views of the lake. Unfortunately, NOT a quiet peaceful room for a quick weekend get away.We were placed in a room over the ballroom during a wedding that I was not there for. The music was so loud and disturbing it completely ruined the zen we was going for by being in such a place during off season. The hotel manager should have informed us this event was to occur when we booked the room. We booked the room only a couple of weeks before we were to go so for sure that wedding was scheduled well in advance before our booking. People should be told so they can be mentally prepared for the racket or decide to stay somewhere else.Furthermore the guests for the wedding should be placed in the room over the ballroom not other guests staying at the hotel that have nothing to do with the wedding.Dreadful experience from a noise standpoint. As a point of reference I stayed in room 245. Ballroom is directly below this room. The hotel staff left their cleaning cart down our end of the hallway for two full days. It was unsightly and in the way. These carts should be stored in the closet when not in use. It made the hotel feel less than it was by having cleaning carts out all the time.Breakfast in Glimmerglass was very nice, the view was beautiful. However the breakfast is very expensive for what it was. I guess in this case you are paying for the view, although there is limited seating right at the windows. While the selection was significant, the buffet seemed a bit ridiculous in the off season. There was hardly anyone there when we went to breakfast. While you can be served at your table and not purchase the buffet the pricing is designed in a way that most people would purchase the buffet as it is basically the same price. With all this said, I would recommend this place but I would caution all to ask about weddings, party events and potential for noise and where your room is exactly before you book. Especially if you are looking for a quiet time.

Absolutely a fantastic place, food is great, service was great, perfect sitting on the back porch looking at the 18th. green on the lake. Golf Course was nice and challenging and in great condition. Fairways were wide, plenty of trees and hazards, even if you miss left or right it's still playable, not a lot of woods to get caught up in, which is nice. Clubhouse manager was awesome, great guy and took care of us with options due to work on the back 9, but played that the next morning. The 18th. hole is a blast, you drive over a bride over the water, stop in the middle, walk down some stairs and tee off over the lake. Will definitely be back, great experience, great staff, just a beautiful place.

We like to eat at the Hawkeye Bar & Grill in the Otesaga Hotel. The thing that really makes this restaurant great is the people who work here. All the servers are very special people with interesting back stories. The restaurant's views of the lake and the surrounding hills are truly beautiful. Hotel grounds are really nice. The food is pretty good, affordable, they use fresh ingredients. Relaxing ambience. Highly recommend this restaurant.
