If I could give zero stars, I would. We paid $365 for one night (including a bogus $42 “resort fee”) for two Queens and this place was nothing but a filthy, outdated dump. Dirt on the shower walls, a dirty hotel towel left on our patio, a broken phone with the wrong room number on it, rock-hard spring mattresses that left us unable to sleep & gave us severe back pain, dirty Kurig, and a loud A/C that made it impossible to sleep.

Worst of all, the shower was dangerous—the water wouldn’t regulate and kept surging scalding hot, burning our son. Completely unacceptable and unsafe.

On top of that, hallways were hotter/humid than outside, and NO elevators. You have to drag your luggage down two flights of narrow stairs just to get to a “ground-floor” room.

The only positives were polite front desk staff and beach access, but that doesn’t even come close to making up for how bad this overpriced place is.

This is nothing but a run-down, overpriced dump pretending to be a resort. Motel 6 would have been cleaner, safer, and far more comfortable. Do not recommend. Avoid this hotel at all costs.

I have wanted to stay here for years. What a beautiful view and it looked so nice. outside trash cans were full.security door was broke. We checked in room was dated and not too clean I dusted my own room. That’s bad. The balcony I had so looked forward to was next to a main air conditioner and my loud air conditioner so we couldn’t sit outside. Air in the room was ridiculous loud. The topper was this morning the shower is either hot or cold to regulate it I had to put it at a trickle. I was so disappointed and the price was ridiculous.

Online this hotel looks very good, that's the rooms are very cramped. For $450 this room was horrible. The mattresses are old and saggy. There was no quality in that. The bedroom was small and cramped. The sliding door squeaked and sounded like the rollers, had been gone for about five years. There was no screen on the door so you couldn't open the sliding door. The AC unit was loud and kept kicking off and on the entire night would not maintain a steady temperature. No matter what setting you, put it on. When taking a shower, the hot water fluctuates all over the place from hot to cold. It's a medium in between about every 10 or 15 seconds. The plumbing is horrible. The water is chlorinated heavily. Basically, we will never stay there again.

Very friendly staff! Awesome location. Very fun place to stay with so much to do on the property. Bikes, lawn games, paddleboards and many other things available to borrow.
Nothing too exciting about the rooms....and unfortunately our key kept loosing its unlocking ability...still giving 5 stars because the team there were always friendly about re-mag ing it. Highly recommend this place to stay and would stay here again in a second!!

I read the reviews and booked anyway. To say this place is dated is an under statement. It felt like the place needs to be torn down. The key cards regularly didn't work at different locations and doors. No towels at the pool. The hottub was so low it barely filtered. The weight machine is broken. The sauna is broken. The drapes were full of holes. The sliding glass door was at once double paned but must have broken and wasn't repaired so there is just raw glass around the rim.

However the staff was nice and the beds were comfy. The location is also great. It was awesome to be able to walk right out to beach and nice to walk over to bridge stores.

Not worth the $350 we paid!

My husband and I stay at Talus Rock every time we come into town and it’s one of the most beautiful and interesting places we’ve ever visited. The staff is wonderful and I would highly recommend this retreat to anyone looking for an amazing getaway.

Very quiet and relaxing, which is what my wife and I needed. We stayed 4 nights. Had the most amazing lemon berry cake when we arrived. Very very quiet place. Had breakfast in bed one morning which was cooked perfectly. Then a couples massage that evening. Highly recommend!!!! You don't see a lot of people, but the staff is easily accessible if you need anything.

My friend and I decided to get away and have a girls night and Talus was the perfect place. We met a few other guests staying there and ended up having a lovely evening in the great room swapping travel stories. The property manager Jill was a sweetheart and very attentive. She wanted to make sure our stay met our expectations, which it exceeded. We would absolutely stay here in this beautiful, serene home!

Stayed in the syringa suite as we wanted to be able to self cater. Very limited kitchen tools and supplies with a dishwasher that did not work. Also very stingy with supplies like number of dishwasher tabs. In general they seemed stingy, even when it came to the morning coffee provided which was essentially just one canister for all guests and wasn’t replenished if it ran out.

AC did not work properly and the employer who I spoke to (no idea who as they did not identify themselves and you don’t seem them around the property so it was all by phone / text) seemed irritated to be inconvenienced but we stayed when it was hot. One of the recommendations was to just open the windows but for a ground floor unit, that didn’t seem like a safe secure option.

As previous reviews have commented, there seem to be a lot of rules and extra charges scattered around the place particularly when it comes to pets and hygeine which struck us as odd given there was alot of animal poo that wasn’t cleaned up on the property grounds. Your pet has to be (understandably) leashed but that doesn’t seem to apply to employer pets.

No in person service provided. Didn’t feel welcome and wouldn’t stay here again.

Writing this review as I eat my delicious breakfast in bed. This place was truly magical. Tons of wildlife and gorgeous views outside, luxury and adorable touches on the inside. We stayed in the Kipling room and the tub and view were both incredible. Service was great. Grounds are beautifully maintained. Loved all the frogs 🐸 Already planning our next visit.

If you're searching for true serenity paired with breathtaking views, Talus Rock Retreat is exactly where you’ll find it.

Nestled on a stunning, thoughtfully maintained property, the retreat is surrounded by gorgeous greenery, a tranquil pond, and a beautifully manicured lawn that invites you to simply be.

We spent hours in the cozy indoor chairs, sipping wine and soaking in the stillness. It truly felt like time paused just for us. And if you're lucky, like we were, you might spot deer quietly making their way across the terrain in the early morning light.

From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with warmth and genuine hospitality. Our room was not only beautiful and well-appointed, but also thoughtfully located with direct outdoor access (ideal for both us and our pup). It’s clear the team here goes above and beyond to make every guest feel at home.

One of the things we loved most about Talus Rock was its commitment to giving back. The property amplifies local causes, and guests are able to take part in their mission-driven efforts with opportunities to donate and support the community.

Inside, the retreat exudes a cozy, lodge-like charm, equal parts rustic and refined. The atmosphere is quiet and calming, with soft music floating through the air and wooden textures that make it feel like your own private escape. For us, this has been more than just a place to stay, but it’s a place to reconnect and recharge.

I could totally stay here forever!! Whether you're passing through Sandpoint or planning a longer retreat, Talus Rock Retreat is a hidden gem I can't recommend highly enough.

**Updated after August 2024 Corporate Retreat

We had such a wonderful experience we decided to return with a much larger company in August of 2024 for another corporate retreat. Somehow Talus Rock exceeded the service they provided the last time we visited. From beginning to end (planning to completion of the retreat) the service, quality, and kindness was remarkable. They were organized, patient with me and all of my endless questions, and talented. We arranged a murder mystery dinner with Talus Rock for the Saturday night of the retreat. Talus Rock spent months perfecting the evening and it was very evident that their hard work paid off. We had a large group (just shy of 70 adults) and weeks before the event they individually contacted each participant providing a detailed synapsis of the evening, character details, costume recommendations, everything you could want. The attendees who flew in from all over (mostly from the US, portion of international guests) for the retreat were unbelievably excited for the evening. When the evening came Talus had set up the grounds more beautifully and elaborately than many weddings I had attended. Every detail from name tags, bakery purchased wedding cake (the murder mystery took place at a wedding), toasting beverages and cups and a phenomenal catered dinner during the "wedding," accommodating all dietary restrictions were taken care of with perfection. I was nervous that such a large group would be difficult to engage in the experience. That was not the case, ALL attendants had a wonderful job and were appropriately integrated into the night. The evening had so much laughter and excitement that we didn't want it to end. Can't recommend this retreat center and event enough. We can't wait to do it again. A million thanks to creating such bonding memories over the weekend. 6 out of 5 stars:).

We recently hosted a weekend work retreat for a gaming company at Talus Rock. The facility could not have been more perfect and it was exactly what we were looking for. The retreat center itself had excellent kitchen facilities, plenty of tables for board games and meetings, a perfect outdoor space for setting up catering outside, and beautiful rooms. The grounds are very special and it is obvious a lot of care goes into the facility. Also plenty of parking and great location. The staff was lovely to work with, all kind, available, and helpful. Check out and in was extremely easy We also booked a murder mystery event and the chef was very kind and Chairis (spelled wrong) was fabulous and many of the attendees said the murder mystery was their favorite part of the retreat. They also organized a nice scavenger hunt to explore downtown. We are really grateful to Talus Rock, it was exactly what was needed after a long time of not being able to gather and finally with everyone vaccinated we were able to celebrate being together at this remarkable facility.

Gem in the Gem State
On our last night of a 2 week road trip, we found Talus Rock Retreat (TRR) on Google. The listing details & pricing peaked our interest, leading us to book the Selkirk Room. From my booking conversation on the phone with Jill (co-manager) to our final goodbye’s the next day, we were left with wonderful memories & much gratitude for Jill/Chad, the staff & the owners who created this amazing place. In the interest of being as concise as possible, we’ll capsulize our comments & encourage u to have ur own unique experience in this hidden Gem on the outskirts of Sandpoint, Idaho
*The Retreat—-no better words to describe the ambiance of this magnificent & elegant place, yet inviting serenity; blending with nature.
*The Staff—Jill/Chad & staff exuded genuine friendliness & were attentive to all guests.
They shared about the history of the Retreat & were knowledgeable about the area. They were perfect hosts.
*Selkirk Room—-was beautifully appointed & absolutely comfortable. No extraneous noises other than the song of birds once we opened the French doors to the veranda in the morning.
Bathroom was luxurious.
*Breakfast—provided food items & coffee/tea were as described & more.
*Grounds—-Expansive & serene. 13 acres mindfully gardened & peaceful soul refreshing experience.

If near Sandpoint, ID & looking for accommodations,TRR will be a very memorable choice.

Talus Rock was unique and charming. We stayed in the Selkirk room. The room was spacious and had amenities which included climate control and extra linens. Unfortunately, my husband and I were very displeased with the breakfast. We woke up at 9am to go downstairs to find an unappealing slice of bread in a bag. Furthermore, there was no fruit or eggs out as advertised on the website. In the morning, the staff was unpleasant by not acknowledging us so we packed our bags and left. We ate breakfast in town. Overall, I would not recommend this place. A bed and breakfast should have a decent breakfast.

My husband and I stayed in the grand arbor room on our honeymoon for three days. The place wasn't bad, but it wasn't nearly as impressive as the pictures led us to believe. The pool is laughably small, the grounds aren't nearly as secluded as we were led to believe, most of the rooms in the building are just basic bedrooms with a microwave in them. Everything is just... smaller than it looked. The breakfast bar is also a little odd in its choices of food. It felt like it was catering to an over 60 crowd. The staff is very attentive... almost too attentive if you're an introvert. All in all, it's fine, but pretty expensive for what you're getting.

My husband and I were passing through with our dog, and spent the night at Talus Rock. What a lovely place! We were (all) welcomed by our kind hosts. The building is beautifully situated, with lovely views of a water feature in the back. The decor - and each room - is uniquely beautiful. We had a great sleep and enjoyed the continental breakfast the next day, looking out at songbirds, geese, and a heron who was hoping to get a gosling! This will be our choice the next time we’re in Sandpoint.

Hoping to submit this anonymously as you can see criticism is not received well by the management and they pull up your stay information to argue their invalid point. The responses are not from the owner. They are very checked out from this place. If you want to pay $14.95 you can buy the booklet to take home and learn about the family.
Talus Rock is far from “luxury”. I have stayed at many 4-star accommodations and this place claiming as that is a reach. Granted the home is artistic, unique, eclectic, etc., however, it is just a 1990’s mansion that no longer houses the family that built it. Instead of selling it the owners decided to turn it into a bed and breakfast. The furnishings are not antiques, but pieces that were picked up second hand. This property is not a resort, it is not luxurious, nor is Talus Rock and bed and breakfast. I am thankful we brought some breakfast items with us as the stale bread items, instant oatmeal, and hard-boiled eggs were a joke.
We were excited to stay here when looking at the photos online, but wow talk about bait and switch. I would give an A+ to the photographer and marketing person. Once I stepped into the Syringa room (previously known as the mother-in-law suite) there was much disappointment. The suite was much smaller than represented online. There was little privacy unless you had all the window coverings closed. It was very cool that the hot tub was right on the deck, however it is a public hot tub. If it were not for the shades on the patio door you had a choice to watch other guests dry hump in the jacuzzi or they could watch you in your room.
We will never stay here again, and I would not recommend Talus Rock. If you are willing to spend $200+ a night for a substandard breakfast, dated furniture, dogs running freely, and creepy hosts then TRR is for you.

Our stay was short and sweet but absolutely perfect. My husband and I wanted a quiet place to celebrate our anniversary. When we ran across this place, it was exactly what we were looking for! The host, Chad, greeted us when we got there and gave us a quick tour. Everyone was very nice. We stayed in the Arbor room, which was breathtaking. You can tell a lot is custom done. The shower is so unique and relaxing. The heated floors are also really a really nice touch. The view from our room was stunning with everything covered in fresh snow. You're only ten minutes from downtown, which made it convenient for us to grab dinner before heading there. Overall, it was an amazing stay, and I would highly recommend it if you're looking for that perfect quiet getaway.

The stay was beautiful. We stayed in the syringa suite. The bathroom is very small. And the hot tub is right outside the room. Which is awesome but awkward at the same time. The whole place has so much character I would say it’s more of an air bnb than a resort. The “breakfast” is toast, jam, yogurt, apple and a banana. The floors are heated which was amazing! Plenty of blankets and pillows- not enough towels. I wish they had a better lay out on the website of where the rooms are and what they are next too. Paying to check in early I think is to nickel and diming, offering complementary socks or slippers ( shoes off while inside) would be awesome. The feel is home away from home which is great but also meaning the place has quarks that need to be fixed. Amber bear in is similar to this feel but with a stay you get an actual home cooked breakfast and they offer a bonfire at night. I wouldn’t choose that room again ( it did look better in photos) there’s notes everywhere about if you use this make sure you do this - that’s to much when your paying to stay somewhere. I understand the concept but it needs to be revamped. The marketing is great but the reality is different. We met Chad and Jill. I’m not sure if they were hosts or owners. Chad is very friendly Jill very stand off.

My husband and I chose to celebrate our 30th anniversary at Talus this March. Communication pre-stay was top-notch, we ordered extra's to include couple's massage, private chef dinner & breakfast in bed. We were greeted outdoors by cute little dogs & inside staff with "Welcome Home" upon our arrival, what an amazing custom front door. We stayed in the Grand Arbor room and it was very nice & quiet, the bed was very comfortable, the custom 2 head rain shower was unique and beautiful. We had everything we needed in the room including coffee, wine glasses and even some chocolate kisses. The view overlooked the backyard with the natural ponds & pools, although it was all ice & snow covered it was still beautiful, I can only imagine the beauty in the summer. The massage was great, although 1 masseuse had their car break down, but the 1 that was there was able to accommodate us perfectly. Now, the dinner was the highlight of our stay! Chef Chris Arlo & his assistant (sorry don't remember her name) not only prepared our custom 7 course dinner in this interactive experience, but they entertained us with many stories. The only improvement that I could recommend is that we missed the entrance sign at the driveway and then maybe have another sign where to park, I know there was lots of snow, so maybe they were just buried. The other thing I wanted to mention is that although wine was included in our dinner, they don't have any other alcohol there for purchase, so bring your own. This was an experience we'll remember for our lifetime and will be sure to come back to enjoy again.

We stayed one night in the Grand Arbor room (the tree room). So we didn't use any of the extras offered or spend a lot of time on the property. We liked it and I'm already making plans to go back. The room met my main requirements. The bed was comfortable, it had coffee and it was quiet. Also, the open concept tree shower and the view were both amazing. However, I think it's important to know I would not use the words "luxury" or "elegant" in a description. Talus Rock is "unique" "funky" "cozy" "artsy". Not luxury. It needs a fair amount of TLC, some deep cleaning, and it isn't a resort. It's more like an old school (pre airbnb) bed and breakfast. Which was fun in the morning. Hanging in the great room talking to other guests and the host. I'm not sure about the word "retreat" either. It is relaxing and peaceful and if you book the extras and use more of the property, could maybe feel like a retreat. If you're not expecting luxury or looking for it then this is a great spot.

The staff went above and beyond to accommodate our every need. From the moment you walk in, it feels like home. Getting to walk around in my slippers, watch the sunrise over the mountains, and get an incredible massage were just some of the reasons I will continue to come back time and time again. Seriously, I've never felt just as refreshed and relaxed after a trip as I was after staying here. So so so gorgeous and refreshing!!

My wife and I went here for our anniversary in early December. We really had no idea what to expect but we were pleasantly surprised. The place is beautiful and the grounds were quite expansive. We found the entire weekend there to be relaxing and quiet which is what we wanted!

The first night we stayed in the Grand Arbor room. The shower is pretty awesome. The room was quite large and quiet even though it’s on the main floor. There isn’t a place to hang out but it’s a great room to experience.

The next. Ugh t we had the Kipling room upstairs. It was a lot smaller but we enjoyed it more. It was just more “warm” and comfortable plus the view outside of the mountains was epic.

We didn’t eat here other than the breakfast. You definitely need a car as there isn’t anything nearby.

My colleagues and I wanted something different for our annual work party so decided to do the murder mystery at Talus Rock Retreat. What a fun night!! From beginning to end, we felt glamorous and well taken care of. The catering from Arlo’s restaurant was 5-star as well. Whether it be with family or friends or colleagues I would definitely recommend switching up the usual party and spicing it up with a murder mystery dinner.

A decent stay in a lovely lodge. The rooms are comfortable and relaxing. The staff is friendly and professional. Friendly dogs roam unfettered. The drawbacks are the standard breakfast: coffee, juice, and either toast or bagel plus hard boiled eggs. Given the $400+/night cost and with nothing walkable close, this was a huge disappointment. Guests can order a lavish breakfast brought to the room at additional cost. Same is true for turndown, mint service. Also disappointing was no champagne or something to commemorate our anniversary. Lots of service options like massages available at additional cost. Perhaps my expectations were too high for our anniversary stay. There is nothing particular special to warrant staying here again. Nothing went wrong or was bad at all; I expected a real breakfast, perhaps a cocktail, sherry, or wine hour, and more things to do at the property. Neither a retreat nor a B&B and $400+/night is a lot for only a little.
